Meg
The celebrations at Roseâs had gone on late, so Meg had fallen into a heavy sleep the moment her head had hit the pillow. It was the first time sheâd crashed out like that since she and Oliver had split. When she finally woke, at just gone eight the next morning, she lay there for a while going over the previous dayâs events. Oliver coming down to see her had finalised things. They were over. There was no going back.
The knowledge made her feel incredibly sad. They had loved each other so much. Still did. How could it all be gone?
If only Oliver had been honest at the beginning, before she had fallen in love with him, before theyâd got married. Yes, it would have hurt, but not as much as this, seven years on.
Youâve got to pull yourself together, Meg. Get on with your life.
A tap on the door dragged her out of her thoughts. âWant a cuppa?â
âYes, please,â she replied.
She remembered accepting Leoâs invitation for a drink later today and that she was going to ask her mum if she wanted to come too. She didnât want to leave Mum home alone; although she was putting a brave face on things, Meg knew that she was still working through some complicated emotions.
There was another tap on the door a few minutes later and Mum came in carrying a mug of tea. Her eyes were puffy, Meg noticed, and her face pale.
âDid you sleep okay?â her mum asked.
âLike a log.â Meg took the mug from her mum. âHow about you?â
âTossing and turning. I keep wondering if Iâm being selfish, splitting up with your dad like this.â She sat down on the edge of the bed. âItâs so messy, Meg. Weâll have to sell the house, split the proceeds, then thereâs all the personal stuff, the furniture. I feel like Iâm going to be turfing your dad out of his home.â
âI know but itâs your home too, Mum. You worked and paid the mortgage as well,â Meg reminded her. She took a sip of her tea. âOliver and I are going to have to do the same. And I need to get somewhere to live, where I can have the bunnies too. Oliver has to let me have them. We canât split them up, it would be cruel, and I know he loves them too but it was my idea to have them and I canât bear to be parted from them. I miss them terribly.â
âIâm sure you can come to some arrangements, love. As the old song goes, âbreaking up is hard to doâ.â
âYouâre telling me.â Meg blinked back the tears. Think positive, Meg. Youâve got to get on with your life, she told herself again. It was becoming her mantra.
âRose asked us both over for lunch today. Do you fancy it?â Mum said. âLeo and Sam will be there too.â
Why not? Itâs better than sitting here moping. âLeo also asked me if he could buy me a drink today at the Anchor, to thank me for cheering Sam up, and to ask you to join us.
